Product or Service Design Award
This Award has specific criteria that evaluates export focussed products/projects/services throughout development, commercialization and export journey.
Multiple entries in multiple categories accepted.

STEP 1:  DOWNLOAD the ENTRY TEMPLATE for the Product or Service Design Award and save locally.

STEP 2:  COMPLETE all questions in the ENTRY TEMPLATE and save locally.

STEP 3:  Go to the ONLINE SUBMISSION page for the Product or Service Design Award.
  • Fill in the required business information first.
  • Then COPY and PASTE your answers to questions 1 to 12 from your ENTRY TEMPLATE into the corresponding numbers in the ONLINE SUBMISSION page.
  • There is also provision within the ONLINE SUBMISSION to attach images and your logo.
Design Strategy Award
The Design Strategy Award has specific criteria that evaluates how export focussed organisations use design as a strategic business tool throughout the value chain including business model design, integration leadership and culture.

STEP 1:  DOWNLOAD the ENTRY TEMPLATE for the Design Strategy Award and save locally.

STEP 2:  COMPLETE all questions in the ENTRY TEMPLATE and save locally.

STEP 3:  Go to the ONLINE SUBMISSION page for the Design Strategy Award.
  • Fill in the required business information first.
  • Then COPY and PASTE your answers to questions 1 to 10 from your ENTRY TEMPLATE into the corresponding numbers in the ONLINE SUBMISSION page.
  • There is also provision within the ONLINE SUBMISSION to attach images and your logo.

Q..Which businesses are eligible?
A..Any product or service business export revenue prior to entering.

Q..Which PRODUCTS are eligible for the Product Design Award?
A..Go to the HOME PAGE for more information.

Q..Which BUSINESSES are eligible in the Design Strategy Award?
A..Any business or service demonstrating the application of design thinking in business model design, integrated design, design leadership and design strategy throughtout the entire value chain.

Q..Can you submit more than one Product Design entry ?     
A..Yes but one product per submission or sector please

Q..Can you submit for both Product Design and Design Strategy?    
A.. Yes

Q..Is your submission confidential?
A..Yes. All judges will be rquired to agree to confidentiality as a condition of agreement to participate in the judging process. Export revenue information will not be publicly available for viewing.

Q..Do the Judges need to see the Product and visit the Business?
A..Judges will make their assessment based on the online application, images supplied, youtube/vimeo links, and website addresses submitted
Q..What is the Evaluation Criteria?
A..The Design for Export Awards Judges will evaluate entries based on the overarching design criteria below.
1. Good Design:
  • How well does the entry address the specific questions below.
2. Innovation:
  • Does the entry push the boundaries of new and innovative thinking in design practice?
  • Is the entry truly unique, imaginative and innovative and does it offer a totally new and groundbreaking value proposition with world-first features?
  • Does the entry use new systems, materials, processes and/or technology in a clever, imaginative and original manner?
3. Impact:
  • Commercial Impact: Does the entry have the potential to make a significant positive impact on business performance? Will the investment in design result in a significant increase in market share, EXPORT sales and/or customer loyalty?
  • Social Impact: Does the entry have the potential to make a significant positive impact on society? Will it improve the quality of life for people and our planet and help contribute to a better, safer and more prosperous world?
  • Environmental Impact: Does the entry have the potential to make a significant positive impact on the environment? Will the design set a new benchmark for sustainable design and help contribute to a better and more sustainable future?

Do the materials and processes used have a minimal impact on the environment?
Is the product/project//service resource efficient in its day-to-day use?

Does the quality of the design/project//service correspond with the desired price point?
Are the chosen materials and construction/manufacturing techniques appropriate?

How does your organization have a clear purpose that is linked to a clear understanding of the market it operates in?
Does everyone in the organisation can clearly state the core purpose of the business and that they have a sufficient understanding of the business strategy?
How has the organisation created an environment where the staff are aligned to the vision of the organisation’s desired future?
Is there clear alignment between the organisation’s products and services, its business model and the overall company strategy?
Q 7: Customer and Market Immersion: (max 100 words)
Does the organisation understand the needs and motivations of their customers beyond traditional market segmentation?
Has the organisation immersed themselves beyond the world of their customer and gained empathy with all stakeholders in their business?
Is the role of customer and market immersion and understanding organisation-wide, embedded in the culture of the organisation and formally supported throughout the business?
Has the customer and market immersion activities resulted in a clear value proposition?

Is innovation in the organisation understood to be more than just an R&D activity and are the innovation programs in the business design-led?

Is the organisations business model competitive and provides a degree level of innovation outside of technical competencies and product / service offerings offering?
Has all elements of the business model been resolved and balanced to meet the firms purpose?
